Swissy Lick Fit
"Swissy Lick Fit" is an informal term used by many Greater Swiss Mountain Dog owners to describe episodes of sudden, frantic licking and unusual eating behaviors that appear to be associated with gastrointestinal discomfort.
During an episode, a Swissy may begin licking anything within reach, including:
- Carpet
- Hardwood or tile floors
- Furniture
- Walls
- Bedding
Some dogs may also frantically eat grass, leaves, dirt, paper, carpet fibers, or other non-food items, while repeatedly swallowing air.
These episodes can be alarming to witness but are commonly reported by Swissy owners.
Because some symptoms of a lick fit can resemble the early stages of GDV, owners should always err on the side of caution. If your dog develops a swollen abdomen, repeatedly attempts to vomit without producing anything, becomes weak, or appears distressed, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
What Causes It?
The exact cause of a Swissy Lick Fit remains unknown. Several theories have been suggested, including:
- Excess intestinal gas
- Acid reflux
- Stomach irritation
- Dietary sensitivities or food intolerance
- Gastrointestinal discomfort of unknown origin
Some owners have wondered whether lick fits are an early warning sign of Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV or bloat). However, there is currently no scientific evidence to support a direct connection, and many Swissies that experience lick fits never develop GDV.
Who Does It Affect?
Lick fits are most commonly reported in young Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, although they can occur at any age. Many dogs appear to experience them less frequently as they mature.
What Should You Do?
If your Swissy experiences a lick fit:
- Stay calm and closely observe your dog
- Remove access to harmful objects that could be swallowed
- Contact your veterinarian if episodes are frequent, severe, or accompanied by vomiting, abdominal swelling, lethargy, or signs of pain
- Follow your veterinarian's recommendations regarding medications that may help reduce stomach acid or gas
